

The freedom to publish, of course, is also a freedom to read and the freedom to write. In his video acceptance speech, Rushdie said, "Hello from New York! I'm glad to join you in this way. Since the author is still recovering from the attack, he accepted the award virtually. More recently, in August 2022 he was brutally stabbed during an event in upstate New York for it.

It was roughly 30 years ago when a fatwa was issued against Rushdie for writing 'The Satanic Verses', which is now banned in several countries. The Freedom to Publish award, which was establised in 2022, is given to an author, publisher or bookseller who stand up agianst intolerance, even when threatened. Booker-winner Salman Rushdie was awarded the British Book Award 2023 for Freedom to Publish in a ceremony in London on May 15, 2023.
